WORK-RELATED LEARNING AND CAREERS

At Woolmer Hill School we are committed to providing students with information, advice and guidance appropriate to their needs within the framework of the Gatsby Benchmarks. Our main objective is that all students achieve the best they can both in terms of academic excellence at school and in the future.

Throughout Years 7 to 11, students' studies cover the themes of careers education and guidance, citizenship, economic and industrial understanding, environmental education, health education and the use of technology.  These are taught through the subjects that each child studies, the Identity (PSHE - Personal, Social and Health Education) lessons, the active tutorial lessons and special events such as guest speakers, Activities Week and Work Experience.  We firmly believe in the value of work experience and all Year 10 students do a week's work experience at the end of Year 10. We  work closely with our local Federation of Schools and all students in Year 10 have the opportunity of attending careers and skills fairs.

We recognise the importance of preparing students properly for their working life and as well as an in-house dedicated Careers coordinator, we also use an independent, qualified Careers Advisory company who work with students in each year group. Students have individual careers advice in Year 10 and Year 11 with a focus on careers choices and post-16 applications, and Key Stage 3 students also have small group sessions.

We have a school ethos in which 97% of our Year 11 students continue into further education, with the rest taking on a modern apprenticeship or employment with training. Our main objective is that all students achieve the best they can both in terms of academic excellence at school and in the future. The school aims to have no NEET students after leaving. It is our objective to ensure that all students have a place in education, employment or training on leaving us.

We work closely with our main Sixth Form provider, Godalming College, to support the further education application and transition process through the curriculum. All of our students are guaranteed a place at the outstanding Godalming College, on a suitable course, when they leave Woolmer Hill.

Year 10 Work Experience

Our current Work Experience programme ensures that all Year 10 students complete a week of work experience in the Summer term. Placements take place at a wide variety of local, and not so local businesses, and give students the experience of life in the work place.

Our Work Experience Coordinator for 2024/25 is Mr Wakely

The National Careers website has a number of useful guides and tools that are also very good and we would also suggest looking at How2Become a company who provide lots of careers resources especially focused on helping individual secure that dream job.

Our temporary Careers Lead is Mr S Williams whilst Mrs Worsell is on maternity leave.
