Our House System

At Woolmer Hill, our House system is an integral part of our everyday school experience. We have four Houses, each with its own Head of House, House Captain, two deputies and its own unique identity.

Our four Houses are:

  • Blackdown
  • Frensham
  • Marley
  • Oakhurst

Every student and member of staff is in one of the houses and are all encouraged to show pride and team spirit within their house.

The house system allows our students to engage in a wide range of activities and competitions; to develop a sense of community and cohesion; to participate in healthy competition and to develop skills and personal traits that they may not have the opportunity to develop within the classroom but that may aid them in the future.

Tutor groups are organised into houses and we hold regular house meetings, where tutor representatives can express the views and ideas of their peers. Our House Captains and Deputies help to develop and enhance these ideas and work alongside our Senior Four to design new house competitions, charity events and student-led projects each year.

There are a variety of house competitions throughout the year, which cover our main 4 House Cups: Academic, Arts, Community and Sports. The diversity of events means all students have the opportunity to participate and represent their House in something they enjoy or are good at.

Some of the competitions include: netball and football penalty shoot-outs, Rangoli drawing competition, Spelling Bee, ‘Snap Away!’ photography competitions, Food Bank donations at Christmas and Easter, World Book Day doors, Big Fat Quiz of the Year, Pi Recital and Bake Off, Linear Rounders and Sports Day... to name a few!

Both within and outside the classroom, the house system plays an important role and provides students the chance to earn house points. This plays an enormous part in our rewards system and students can earn points for work, behaviour and actions that signify either, or both, of our ‘Proud to Belong’ and ‘Proud to Achieve’ ethos. They will also earn house points for participation in competitions and co-curricular activities such as clubs and societies (see the ‘Enrichment’ section on our website for more on Co-curricular Activities).

At the end of each academic year, the house points are added up and houses are awarded with each of the 4 Cups and an Overall Cup, which the Head of House proudly displays for the next academic year.
